From the start of next financial year, students will get an India-specific ranking of educational institute. The first results of the India-specific rankings of all educational institutes across public and private sectors and across streams would be out in April this year. It will help parents and students to make informed decisions of getting into any college. The nation-wide ranking would cover all universities — both government and private and deemed, including affiliated colleges. UGC has asked all institutes to register themselves with the government, giving relevant data, without delay as the first ranking list is expected to be released by early April this year.
Criteria for ranking
The Government of Indian, in last September, had unveiled the parameters for the rankings. They include the graduation outcome, perception about the institute, teaching-learning resources, research activities besides practice and collaborative performance. The institutes would be ranked separately across disciplines and in category A and B, with category A institutes getting extra weightage for teaching and research. Technology will also play a major role in deriving the ranking of the colleges, as the more resourceful and technologically advance the college will be the brighter are its chances to get a higher ranking in the index. will definitely give them an edge in rankings.
How will it help?
The rankings being collated by the government is being seen as India’s answer to international ranking agencies such as Times Higher Education and QS World University rankings. No Indian institute has made the cut to the top 10 in these rankings’ lists. Most of the Indian so not get ranked and there is no official feedback as to how the college or the university is performing. Once the ranking system gets in place it will help parents and students to decide which college to get admitted, it will also bring a little pressure to the colleges to perform well and get better in the ranking.
