The existing education system is inadequate and needs to be changed in a manner that it improves internal qualities of humans. ‘Peace Education’ should be made part of school curricula and that students should be taught to celebrate the religious and cultural diversity of India. It is a common fact the all destructive situations are ultimately stemmed from emotions. The education system should try to increase constructive emotions. The basic human nature is based on compassion which is a positive thing; India has the potential to bring about this peace. It is the only country where all major traditions live together and the 3,000 years of Indian culture is rooted in non-violence and religious harmony which can be yearned through modern-day education system.
What is the need?
There have been contradicting scenarios that are developing in the country on a regular basis and harmony of the nation gets affected on daily basis. It is necessary for an individual to stay connected to its root of culture that in turn develops the identity and do away with the insecurities. Peace-education not only focuses on a collective growth but also assists in personal growth and develop leadership qualities in an individual.
How it can be done?
There are a lot of researches that are being carried out to get more insight in developing an established approach to incorporate Peace-education in the school system. There are some proven by-ways thought which the goal have been achieved so far in developed countries. “Peace clubs” and libraries can be set up in schools, and supplementary reading material can be made available to promote “peace skills”. Further, a pool of films and documentaries that promote values of justice and peace can also be screened in schools. To have more impact schools can organize activities to promote India’s religious and cultural activities, and Human Rights Day, Girl Child Day, Environment Day etc can be observed in schools.
